The
Science Magnet program is for students interested in careers in the
sciences, medicine, engineering, or other related degree programs at
four-year colleges and universities. Math and science courses are
integrated and taught with an application focus. Lab and research skills
are stressed. Students have an opportunity to earn over eleven credits
in math and science as well as complete credit at Wichita State
University and other local colleges and universities. |
Technology
NEM is connected to the world. Students have internet availability in each
classroom, a computer lab, and the library. The school has its own local
area network. NEM utilizes PC hardware.
Technology in the form of robotic arms, wind tunnels, and testing equipment
is utilized. All students are expected to use this technology for research,
word processing, presentations and communication.
Partnerships
NEM’s science department has strong
educational partnerships with Project Lead the Way, Wichita State University, the University of
Kansas School of Medicine, Friends University, and Newman University. The
department also receives support from Boeing, Raytheon, Access Inc., and
other local and national businesses. Partners assist with competitions,
instruction, projects and mentorships.
Competitions
NEM science students have successfully competed in academic demonstration
and problem solving activities such as the Kansas Junior Academy of Science,
Science Olympiad, Electric Car Competition, BEST Robotics contest, and
technical writing contests.
