Northeast Magnet

High School

I want my

child at NEM,

but they

aren't so sure!

                                                                                                                   We recommend your student

                                                                                                                  tour the school, 'shadow' a

NEM student for a day, or

                                                                                                                  attend an information evening.

If your student is still not

                                                                                                                  sure, you can apply for

                                                                                                                  admission; however,

                                                                                                                  students who do not want

                                                                                                                  to attend NEM may have

                                                                                                                  difficulty with the

                                                                                                                  curriculum.  Parents need to

                                                                                                                       strongly evaluate what is

                                                                                                                                   best for their child

        Transportation?

USD 259 students who live 2.5 miles or more from NEM are provided

bus service in the city of Wichita. There is not busing

                                                                                                    for out-of-district students.

Math Placement Concerns:

Most freshmen start with Algebra I; however, advanced

placement options are available (at the discretion of the

math dept.)  NEM does not offer any math courses less

than Algebra I.  Further, with Algebra II being a graduation

requirement, taking Algebra I freshmen year will start them on track.

Students wishing to enter Algebra I without a course titled Pre-Algebra

may do so if they know the times table thoroughly (one through 12),

know the elements of working with variables (X-6=17; solve for X), are

willing to concentrate and work with the teacher as the course progresses.

Teachers work with students who need extra help in understanding the

concepts through tutoring during class, at lunch and after school.

Student who have not taken pre-algebra may need to seek extra assistance.

How are we different from

other high schools?

Focused study: Each magnet area has an

extremely focused scope and sequence of

material highly related to each magnet area

which in turn enables students to search

deeply into magnet subject areas.

Projects: Each student completes a specific magnet area project each year, requiring research, writing, data-collection, use of technology, and presentation skills.

Longer periods, fewer classes: Four, 95-minute periods are repeated each day and support the time needed for deep study in the magnet areas and academic core classes. Most classes last for a semester (18 weeks) and new courses are taken the following semester, similar to a college. The schedule also supports students as they progress from their entry level math through Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry, Calculus, or higher.

Progress Reports: NEM connects with parents through weekly progress reports; issued every Friday. The progress reports provide information on student grades, assignments, and lists teacher comments. Detailed individual student reports are available online. To access reports on-line, parents must first have a Prostar access form on file with NEM. Parent conferences are twice a year, once in the fall and again in the spring.

The Teaching Staff

NEM has a very highly qualified, strong magnet and academic core teaching staff.

Many of the staff members have received state and local recognition for successes

in teaching. However, Northeast teachers do not believe their greatest successes

are the awards and recognitions they receive, but are the rewards of knowing that

they helped a student be successful in college and beyond.

NEM also provides consulting services with a resource special education teacher,

as well as a gift facilitator. Contact your middle school Child Study Team

for information.
